Devon Harris is a recognized participant in the "Illinois Teacher of the Year" award. She believes in teaching students to understand and grow with a disability rather than allowing the disability to overcome them. Her passion for student success extends to the staff as Devon has created an environment of teacher support by facilitating a mentor program.
Her leadership style is democratic and transactional. She is passionate about seeing people succeed and helping them stay successful.
My Story
Devon Harris has extensive experience working as an educational administrator serving students with a wide range of disabilities in general education and special education settings. As Director of the district’s transition program, she is responsible for overseeing special education programming, transition and life skills education, social-emotional learning, student behavior and discipline, crisis management, and vocation programs. As director, Devon manages a multi-tier program that includes a college transition connection, a CTE training program, and IEP case management.
Devon has a Master’s in Education and over 20 years of special education experience. She has developed a me of skills and strategies for teaching a multitude of disabilities from middle school to transition-age students. Through her teaching experience, she has utilized cooperative learning techniques, developed effective classroom management strategies, and implemented a freshman success Social Emotional Learning curriculum to name a few.
Devon’s passion for team building has led her to create programs to promote positive relationships and appreciation between students and staff resulting in decreased student referrals and improved staff-student relationships. As Director, Devon continues to encourage and support educators through professional development programs that increase staff effectiveness when working with the diverse learning population. Devon boasts an effective style of managing a variety of teaching professionals to foster student support within the district including ensuring her students receive services in the areas of social work, psychology, health, speech and language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision, orientation/mobility, assistive technology, behavior specialists and paraeducators.
